Victory Shield – Monday 12 November 2018
Match 1, Scotland v Wales
St Brendan’s Park Tralee, KO 13.00
The match started at a brisk tempo with Wales dominating the early exchanges. They took the lead after 12 minutes play when Matthew Baker tapped in following a corner. Kevin Hanratty came close for the Scots as they gradually came into the game. A last-ditch tackle by Welsh centre-back Bryce Jones prevented a Scottish equaliser just before half-time when Cole McKinnon’s shot was blocked.
Half-time Scotland 0 Wales 1
Scotland began the second half strongly and drew level after 47 minutes when centre-forward Jaden Ferguson ran through to shoot past the Welsh keeper Max Williams. The game ebbed and flowed in difficult conditions with driving rain. Wales had a couple of chances which were well-saved by the Scottish keeper Tom Ritchie. Five minutes from time Wales were awarded a penalty but Ollie Ewing’s kick thundered against the bar and was cleared. A draw was a fitting conclusion to an excellent opening game in the competition, both teams picking up a well-deserved point.
